DESCRIPTION:Title: Metal additive manufacturing: From melt pools to metal
structures\n\nBy Yuze Huang (Lecturer in laser manufacturing\, Departme
nt of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering\, University of Manchester)\n
\n \nAbstract:\n\nMetal additive manufacturing offers unprecedented oppo
rtunities to produce complex and high-performance metallic structures\,
yet achieving consistent quality requires a fundamental understanding of
the physical processes occurring across multiple length and time scales
. At the heart of these processes lies the melt pool\, where complex las
er–material interactions\, heat and mass transfer\, and fluid flow ultim
ately determine defect formation\, geometrical accuracy and the quality
of the manufactured structure.\n\n\nThis presentation will share our res
earch on metal additive manufacturing across different scales\, from und
erstanding melt-pool and keyhole dynamics to controlling defects and imp
roving the quality of manufactured structures. Physics-based modelling\,
process optimisation and in-situ monitoring are integrated to better un
derstand process–structure relationships and enable more reliable and in
telligent manufacturing. Case studies covering laser powder bed fusion (
L-PBF) and laser directed energy deposition using both powder and wire f
eedstocks (DED-LB/p and DED-LB/w) will be presented. Finally\, the talk
will discuss how improved understanding and control of manufacturing pro
cesses can enable the production of increasingly complex and functional
metallic structures\, including emerging opportunities in additively man
 ufactured metallic metamaterials.\n\n
