DESCRIPTION:Title: Microstructure-Informed Modelling of the Achilles Tend
on Using Continuum Beam Finite Elements\n\nAbstract:\nThe mechanical beh
aviour of the Achilles tendon depends on its collagen microstructure and
twisted subtendon architecture. We investigate these contributions usin
g an Absolute Nodal Coordinate Formulation (ANCF) finite-element framewo
rk\, comparing the Gasser–Ogden–Holzapfel (GOH) model with a microstruct
urally motivated Fibre Length Distribution (FLD) model that explicitly d
escribes progressive fibril recruitment. Using MRI-derived human Achille
s tendon geometry and experimental constitutive data\, the FLD model bet
ter captures the initial nonlinear toe region. Shorter fibrils recruit e
arlier and produce a stiffer response\, whereas longer fibrils delay rec
ruitment and increase compliance. We further examine the effects of init
ial pretwist on the medial gastrocnemius\, lateral gastrocnemius\, and s
oleus subtendons. At this stage\, each subtendon is modelled separately
to isolate the effects of pretwist and microstructural variation. Increa
sing pretwist reduces elongation under the same applied load\, with grea
ter sensitivity in the gastrocnemius subtendons than in the soleus. The
next stage will assemble the three subtendons in their pretwisted arrang
ement and incorporate contact and mechanical interaction to investigate
the response of the complete Achilles tendon.\n\n
