SUMMARY:Envisioning Labour-Led Urban Development
UID:{http://www.columbasystems.com/customers/uom/gpp/eventid/}b21g-mo2rhp
 vd-xlbcan
DESCRIPTION:Drawing from Benjamin Selwyn’s (2017) concept of “labour-led
development\,” critiques of existing paradigms of sustainable and just t
ransitions\, and hybrid movements espousing the right to the city\, this
workshop aims to collectively envision the key features of what we call
“labour-led urban development” (LLUD) in the Global South.\n\nWe will e
xplore what “just” urban development looks like from the perspective of
the urban working-classes. What alternatives to existing capitalist deve
lopment paradigms might this perspective entail? And what forms of organ
isation and struggle—past and present—have helped realise these visions?
\n\nThe workshop will take stock of the theoretical contours and practic
al applications of labour-led urban development across three key themati
 c areas:\n(1) Reframing (urban) development\;\n(2) Urban struggles and n
 ew development agendas\; and\n(3) Power\, politics\, and popular organis
ing.\n\nWe look forward to welcoming over 20 presenters. The workshop is
hybrid\, and you are welcome to join either in-person or online.\n\nSpe
akers include: Ben Selwyn\, Nick Clare\, Tom Cowan\, Brandon Marc Finn\,
Graeme Young\, Manish Maskar\, Sofia Negri\, Hitesh Potdar\, Nabeela Ah
