ics Will Not Solve All Your Problems'

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Jonathan Dunn\, University of Illinois Urbana-Champa
ign\n\nThe age of Large Language Models (LLMs) has created an over-confi
dence in computational experiments. As a computational linguist\, I stro
ngly believe that computational models can tell us a great deal about ho
w language works and how it is used. But this over-confidence has allowe
d poorly-defined notions like scale or accuracy to cover up major method
ological flaws in computational experiments. This talk discusses seven s
erious shortcomings that need to be overcome before computational lingui
stics can actually be useful for linguistics as a discipline.
