 and Taiwan (Hybrid)

DESCRIPTION:Japan has no legal framework governing donor conception. In c
ontrast\, Taiwan has legislation that guarantees donor anonymity and res
tricts egg donation to infertile\, legally married heterosexual couples.
\n\nIn this presentation\, I examine the impact of these legal framework
s on people\, as well as individuals’ experiences and responses. First\,
I analyse public reactions to a bill submitted in 2025. \n\nA major opp
osition movement emerged on the grounds that the right to know one’s ori
gins was not sufficiently guaranteed. Second\, I explore how Japanese in
dividuals perceive travelling to Taiwan to receive egg donations. Drawin
g on survey data I collected\, I report on the rationale behind decision
s to accept or decline anonymous donation.\n\nThis seminar is jointly ho
sted by the Morgan Centre for Research into Everyday Lives (SoSS) and Ea
st Asian Studies (SALC). \n\nThe seminar will be held in a hybrid format
\, with attendees welcome to join either in person or online via Microso
 ft Teams. \n\nOn-campus: \n\nLocation: Arthur Lewis\, G.019\n\nTea and c
offee will be served from 3.30pm for those attending in person.\n\nOnlin
