DESCRIPTION:This talk is part of the seminar series of the Centre for Lat
 in American and Caribbean Studies.\n\nWed 11 November 2026\, 5pm (UK tim

  format for the seminar series\, in which two Latin Americanists at the 
 University of Manchester each present short papers of 30 minutes\, each 
 followed by a short Q&A.\n\nPerla Polanco's abstract: Drawing on postcol
 onial approaches to political economy\, this presentation examines oil n
 ationalism in Mexico as a response to historical patterns of colonial ex
 traction\, dependency\, and external domination. Rather than treating th
 e 1938 oil expropriation as a singular assertion of national sovereignty
 \, the paper situates it within broader struggles over the control of na
 tural resources and the legacies of coloniality in Latin America. Focusi
 ng on the evolving role of PEMEX\, it explores how nationalist discourse
 s have articulated claims to development\, self-determination\, and econ
 omic autonomy while remaining embedded within global capitalist structur
 es. The analysis highlights the tensions and contradictions of resource 
 sovereignty in a postcolonial context.\n\nMauricio Renteria Gonzalez's a
 bstract: Drawing on debates surrounding ‘whitening’ in Latin America\, m
 y research examines the racialised imprints of social mobility within Li
 ma’s dominant class. In this presentation\, I discuss the concept of dec
 olouring\, which refers to how Mestizo individuals distance themselves f
 rom racialised and classed stigmatised positions without necessarily att
 aining a symbolically higher racial status. I explore the racial and cla
 ss underpinnings of decolouring in Peru\, highlighting the enduring infl
 uence of Mestizaje as an ideology\, narratives of ‘progress’\, and the p
 ersistence of colourism.\n\nPerla Polanco is Lecturer in Politics at the
  University of Manchester. \n\nMauricio Renteria Gonzalez graduated in 2
 025 with a PhD in Sociology from the University of Manchester\, where he
  is currently a Teaching Assistant in Sociology.\n\n
