DESCRIPTION:This talk is part of the seminar series of the Centre for Lat
in American and Caribbean Studies.\n\nWed 21 October 2026\, 5pm (UK time
). This event will be in person and online. You can follow it online her
 e: https://tinyurl.com/yzm5d7k2\n\nAbstract: In 1972\, anthropologist Er
ic Wolf brought the term “political ecology” into anthropology\, examini
ng how power and ownership shape relationships between people and enviro
nments. The field now informs debates about development\, biodiversity l
oss and climate change. This talk brings political ecology into the Ande
s through research with Indigenous weaving communities in Peru\, Bolivia
and Ecuador. It approaches weaving as part of a biocultural system link
 ing land\, water\, alpacas\, natural dyes\, knowledge\, identity and liv
elihoods. It asks how development\, markets and conservation might suppo
rt biodiversity while strengthening women’s economic agency\, cultural t
ransmission and community control over heritage and shaping future devel
opment priorities.\n\nLaura Bunt-MacRury is an anthropologist who acts a
s International Advisor for Ecological Research and International Partne
rships for the Centro de Estudios Agropecuarios\, Cusco\, Peru. She is a
lso Principal Investigator for the Global Threads project (https://www.g
 lobalthreads.org.uk/).
