DESCRIPTION:Join us for this seminar by Susanna Röblitz (Bergen) as part
of the Maths in the Life Sciences seminar series (and the online North W
est Seminar Series in Mathematical Biology and Data Sciences in collabor
ation with Liverpool Universities). \n\nTitle: Stochasticity in regulato
ry networks: A key for cellular differentiation and reproductive success
\n\nAbstract: Biological noise is the cell-to-cell variability that occu
rs in genetically identical populations due to randomness in molecular r
eactions and environmental fluctuations. This noise is divided into two
primary categories: intrinsic noise and extrinsic noise.\nIntrinsic nois
e comes from the probabilistic nature of individual biochemical reaction
s (such as transcription\, translation\, and molecular binding) happenin
g directly at a specific gene or pathway. Extrinsic noise comes from flu
ctuations in the shared cellular environment or upstream machinery that
globally or pathway-specifically affect multiple processes across the ce
ll. In my talk\, I will showcase how we deal with these two categories o
f noise on two modelling examples. In the first part\, I will highlight
a projection method known as Markov state modelling that allows us to in
fer the long-time dynamic behavior of cellular phenotypes from stochasti
c gene-regulatory networks (intrinsic noise). In the second part\, I wil
l demonstrate on a mathematical model of the human menstrual cycle that
randomness is a critical biological mechanism in follicular recruitment
and selection in reproductive biology (extrinsic noise). \n\nThe talk wi
ll be also be streamed via Teams\, please contact carl.whitfield@manches
ter.ac.uk or igor.chernyavsky@manchester.ac.uk for the link\, or sign up
to the mailing list.\n\nTo subscribe to the mailing list for this event
series\, please send an e-mail with the phrase “subscribe math-lifesci-
seminar” in the message body to listserv@listserv.manchester.ac.uk
