DESCRIPTION:Overview\nDo you ever wonder whether your ideas have commerci
al potential — or how commercialisation could shape your career?\n\nMany
researchers struggle to spot the commercial value hidden within their o
wn work or feel uncertain about how to navigate the commercialisation pr
ocess. Others simply aren’t aware of the career-boosting opportunities t
hat come from engaging with industry\, licensing\, or spin-out creation.
In this workshop\, participants will gain a firm understanding of the c
ommercialisation process at the University of Manchester. The workshop w
ill equip attendees with the skills to identify commercially valuable in
tellectual property within their own research and to recognise potential
stakeholders who may benefit from these innovations. Additionally\, par
ticipants will explore how engaging in commercialisation activities can
influence their career progression and identify the key skills required
for roles in licensing and spin-out ventures.\n\nIntended learning outco
mes\n- Understand the foundations of Commercialisation - Define key comm
ercialisation terminology and concepts\; describe the role of UoM Innova
tion Factory (UoMIF) and the processes used at UoM\; Explain why commerc
ialisation is important for research impact and career development.\n\n-
Identify and assess Commercial potential in research - Recognise how re
search becomes commercialised\; Evaluate who the potential users\, benef
iciaries\, or markets may be\; and Assess the potential value and real-w
orld applications of research outputs through interactive activities.\n\
n- Identify your role in the commercialisation journey - How do I fit in
? What roles academics play in the commercialisation\; Highlighting expe
cted work for licences vs spin out\; Introduction to roles in spin out a
nd in context to academic positions\, and what skills they require.\n\nT
he workshop will combine traditional presentations with interactive grou
p activities. Participants will work collaboratively to identify intelle
ctual property within research\, as well as its potential users and mark
ets. They will further identify if these are more likely to be licence o
r spin-out opportunities. This will be followed by group discussions foc
used on understanding the various roles involved in licensing and spin-o
ut ventures\, and the key skills required to succeed in these positions.
