DESCRIPTION:Corporate Strategy Externalities and Entrepreneurial Ecosyste
m Emergence\n\nAbstract: This study advances entrepreneurial ecosystem t
heory by repositioning incumbent firms as dynamic\, endogenous actors wh
ose strategies shape ecosystem trajectories over time. By conceptualizin
g corporate strategy externalities as a form of external enablement\, we
link micro-level corporate decisions to macro-level patterns of ecosyst
em emergence and demonstrate how ecosystems co-evolve with incumbent fir
m strategies rather than arise solely from policy design or decentralize
d entrepreneurial action. We examine these mechanisms through a longitud
inal mixed-methods case study of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and its anteceden
ts in the Research Triangle region of North Carolina from 1990 to 2012\,
a period marked by major corporate restructurings and rapid ecosystem d
evelopment. Combining an original firm–founder database with archival ma
terials and interviews\, we trace three waves of entrepreneurial spawnin
g associated with distinct strategic shifts at the incumbent firm. The f
indings show that GSK’s strategies—implemented to advance firm-level obj
ectives—generated externalities that unintentionally reconfigured region
al opportunity structures\, catalyzed productive entrepreneurship\, and
contributed to the emergence and deepening of the regional entrepreneuri
al ecosystem.\n\nThe paper is co-authored with Paige Clayton (Georgia In
stitute of Technology).\n\nSpeaker Bio:\n\nMaryann P. Feldman is the Wat
