DESCRIPTION:Abstract: In the current global crisis of liberal democracy\,
  a menacing threat of right-wing populism\, and war in Europe and elsewh
 ere\, a fresh analysis of the Nazi capture of power has renewed relevanc
 e. The process by which Germany became a one-party dictatorship was acco
 mpanied by an everyday assault on the senses\, involving radio broadcast
 s\, flags and the omnipresent threat of street violence. I will ask how 
 Nazi appeals to the senses and emotions helped to mobilise Germans for t
 he ‘national community'.
