Gavin is interested in identifying the molecular basis of cellular recognition events both between cells with our own bodies and also with pathogens. To investigate this, he has developed a range of cell- and protein-based assays to discover extracellular interactions mediated by cell surface receptor proteins in a systematic and scalable manner. Using these tools, his laboratory has made important contributions such as discovering receptor-ligand pairs that are essential for fundamental biological processes such as sperm-egg recognition in mammals, and the invasion of human erythrocytes by the parasite responsible for severe malaria. In his talk, Gavin will outline the development of these methods and how they can be applied to a range of cellular recognition processes. He will discuss recent research using these approaches to identify subunit vaccine targets for parasitic diseases and also new receptor ligand interactions between human leukocytes.
