DESCRIPTION:GDI Lecture co-organised with the Geography Department\n\nRec
ent technical advances mean it is typically cheaper to produce electrici
ty from renewable sources than from fossil fuels. Yet\, around the world
\, the transition to green energy is happening too slowly if it is happe
ning at all. As Brett Christophers argues\, the problem is rooted in the
absurdist nature of capitalist priorities: saving the planet on which o
ur lives depend is not sufficiently profitable. Join us for this lecture
in which Brett discusses his recent book\, The Price is Wrong: Why Capi
 talism Won’t Save the Planet (Verso\, 2024). \n\nBrett Christophers is a
n economic geographer and Professor at the Institute for Housing and Urb
an Research at Uppsala University. He has written extensively on the his
tory of the modern financial sector\, the financial management of real e
conomic assets\, and the effect on the environment from financial manage
ment of land and natural resources. His other recent books include Our L
ives in Their Portfolios (Verso\, 2023) and Rentier Capitalism: Who Owns
the Economy\, and Who Pays for It? (Verso\, 2020).\n\n\n\n
