Benjamin Fernando, Dept Earth Sciences, University of Oxford, joins us for a Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences seminar. Abstract below.
The representation of students and staff from ethnic minority backgrounds in the geosciences leaves much to be desired. However, it is immensely exciting to see a growing number of initiatives at all levels seeking to improve equality, diversity, and inclusion in this and other fields. I will discuss a student-led “Audit for Action” that was undertaken in the Department of Earth Sciences, at the University of Oxford, in 2020 - identifying a number of key areas for improvement. I will also discuss how the strategies and ideas that we developed can be applied to other EDI contexts.
