DESCRIPTION:Claire Loughnan\, University of Melbourne\n\nThrough oral tes
timonies of those detained at the immigration prison located on Manus Is
land in Papua New Guinea\, Against Erasure focuses on how the demolition
of an immigration prison site erased its violent history. This interdis
ciplinary research project adopted innovative approaches to produce a di
gital 3D model as a ‘site of conscience’ bringing into view the neglecte
d histories of state violence at the border.\n\nThe workshop will explor
e the need to preserve the history of this place of violence to honour t
he suffering of those imprisoned there. Claire will talk about some of t
he conceptual\, political and methodological issues raised by the Agains
t Erasure project and invite discussion around memorialisation.\n\nThis
workshop is of interest to students of global development\, humanitarian
studies\, critical geography\, history and anthropology. The session is
more suitable for PGT and PGR students but is open to all. \n
