DESCRIPTION:Rule Making Rules: The Origins of Western Political Instituti
ons and Why They Matter Today.\n\nThe University of Manchester is deligh
ted to host Professor Stefano Bartolini\, Emeritus Professor at the Euro
pean University Institute and one of Europe's most influential scholars
of comparative politics and political theory\, for a prestigious British
Academy Lecture.\n\nWestern societies are shaped by a distinctive polit
ical inheritance. From Roman law and medieval self-government to the evo
lving relationship between secular and religious authority\, Western ins
titutions emerged through centuries of competition between different sou
rces of rules\, authority and legitimacy.\n\nIn this lecture\, Professor
Bartolini examines how this unique historical process generated politic
al pluralism and institutional diversity. He argues that the coexistence
and competition of multiple normative traditions created conditions tha
t have no direct equivalent elsewhere in world history\, helping explain
both the strengths and limitations of Western political development.\n\
nThe lecture will explore:\n\n- The historical origins of Western politi
cal institutions\n- The role of law\, religion and political authority i
n shaping Europe\n- Why pluralism emerged in the West\n- The relationshi
p between institutions and political order\n- Whether Western institutio
nal models can be exported elsewhere\n\nThis lecture will be of interest
to scholars\, students\, policymakers\, and anyone interested in politi
cs\, history\, democracy and the evolution of modern societies.
