DESCRIPTION:Researchers are often at a crossroads on how to share data co
 llected from human participants ethically while complying with the rigor
 ous standards set by UK General Data Protection Regulation and the Data 
 Protection Act. This introductory workshop offers a foundational underst
 anding of data anonymisation principles and practices tailored for socia
 l sciences research.\n\nThis session is designed to equip researchers wi
 th essential knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of data a
 nonymisation. It will cover practical approaches for safeguarding privac
 y in the most common data types in social sciences\, with a focus on qua
 ntitative survey data\, and qualitative transcripts\; brief consideratio
 ns for audio/visual materials are included. We will cover key concepts a
 s defined by applicable data protection legislation and outlined by the 
 Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) guidance\, from definitions of p
 ersonal data to identifiability and effective anonymisation.\n\nDuring t
 his free 90-minute online workshop\, participants will learn the nuances
  of de-identification versus anonymisation techniques\, how to different
 iate between directly identifying information and indirect identifiers a
 nd how to best handle special category data\, with the view of sharing d
 ata ethically and legally.\n\nThis session includes live exercises using
  Mentimeter and will conclude with a dedicated Q&A session administered 
 via Padlet.\n\nPresenter: Maureen Haaker\, UK Data Service. Maureen has 
 worked with the UK Data Service for over 12 years supporting researchers
  and institutions in managing\, preserving\, and sharing qualitative dat
 a ethically and effectively. She runs training sessions on research data
  management\, advises on best practices in data curation and anonymisati
 on\, and has worked on special projects\, including a UKRI-funded projec
 t exploring uses of synthetic data in Trusted Research Environments (TRE
 s). She is co-editor of the IASSIST Qualitative Data Special Interest Gr
 oup and a member of the DDI Working Group developing metadata standards 
 for qualitative data.\n\nLevel: Introductory\n\nExperience/knowledge req
