 \, and Human Rights

DESCRIPTION:European states are currently exploring a number of so-called
‘innovative solutions’ to address the irregular arrival of asylum seeke
rs and migrants at their borders\, often entailing the externalisation o
f asylum processing\, returns or border control. Yet\, available evidenc
e shows that these policies routinely produce wide-ranging harmful effec
ts on human rights\, ranging from diminishing procedural safeguards to e
xposing people to ill-treatment or arbitrary detention.\n\nThis guest ta
lk will outline relevant historical trends\, unpack the European approac
h\, experience and current proposals\, and pinpoint the impact of extern
alisation on people’s lives and the tensions it creates with internation
al human rights law.\n\nRegistration required: Please email emma.scali@m
