SUMMARY:An introduction to time series analysis and forecasting
UID:{http://www.columbasystems.com/customers/uom/gpp/eventid/}u8i-mumid0m
 8-tvl3c8
DESCRIPTION:Time series data is everywhere\, from crime statistics to web
traffic\, and knowing how to work with them means being able to spot tr
ends\, understand seasonality\, and forecast what happens next. Time ser
ies analysis and forecasting are among the most widely used quantitative
techniques in both business and research\, and these skills are increas
ingly in demand as more of our data arrives stamped with a date and time
.\n\nFormat:\n\nThis free online workshop will run in two linked parts w
ith a break in between. Part 1 is a concepts talk and Part 2 is a dedica
ted hands-on code demo. Attendees are welcome to join either or both.\n\
nThe session will include:\n\nAn introduction to time series data\, and
how it differs from cross-sectional and pooled data.\nThe core component
s of time series analysis: trend\, seasonality\, cyclic patterns and noi
se.\nDecomposition and how to check a series for stationarity.\nAn intro
duction to ARIMA/SARIMA forecasting models.\nA live coding demonstration
  in R\, using publicly available\, police-recorded crime data.\nA Q&A se
ssion.\nParticipants will have access to all workshop materials\, includ
ing slide decks and code\, via a GitHub repository\, circulated ahead of
the session alongside a short glossary of key terms so you can arrive a
lready comfortable with the vocabulary.\n\nPrerequisites: No formal prer
equisites are required to attend. However\, those who wish to actively p
articipate in the coding demonstration should have access to R (and RStu
dio) and a basic working knowledge of R\, e.g. setting a working directo
ry\, reading data in\, saving manipulated data under new names\, and run
ning basic descriptive statistics.\n\nLevel: Beginner to Intermediate\n\
nTarget Audience: Researchers\, analysts\, and anyone interested in lear
ning how to forecast time series data\n\nPresenter: Nadia Kennar\, UK Da
ta Service. Nadia is a Research Associate at the UK Data Service within
the Computational Social Science Team (CSS). She has a MRes in Criminolo
gy and Social Statistics. Nadia enjoys developing engaging webinars and
workshops that incorporate live coding and has a particular interest in
demonstrating and discussing coding techniques. She is motivated by seei
ng participants apply these concepts to advance their own research and p
rofessional work.\n\nThis event will be livestreamed on our UK Data Serv
ice YouTube channel but the chat will be disabled. By registering and at
tending the Zoom event you will be able to ask questions and interact.\n
\nRecordings of UK Data Service events are made available on our YouTube
channel and\, together with the slides\, on our past events pages soon
after the event has taken place.
