Andrew Newby (Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies)
“Charitable Donations to Disaster Victims: Case Studies from Nineteenth-Century Scandinavia”
Dr Andrew G. Newby is Marie Sk?odowska-Curie Senior Research Fellow, Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies, Denmark. He has written extensively on northern European history & society. His recent publications include Famines in European Economic History: The Last Great European Famines Reconsidered (co-editor, 2015), and The Enormous Failure of Nature: Famine and Society in the Nineteenth Century (editor, 2017). He has also curated (2017 to present) the exhibition Nälkä! The Great Finnish Famine – a 150th Anniversary Exhibition at the Irish National Famine Museum. His current project examines the psychology of giving to disaster victims in mid-nineteenth-century Scandinavia, exploring the regional, ethnic, religious and class identities behind the “decision to donate”.
