SUMMARY:GRiEG Seminar: African Indigenous Ontologies for Decolonial Clima
 te Change Education and Resilience

DESCRIPTION:The presentation will argue that resilience requires epistemi
c plurality\, to which African Indigenous ontologies and decolonial clim
ate change education make vital contributions. Colonial legacies across
Africa disconnect climate change education from socio-cultural\n realiti
es and constrain local epistemic agency. Indigenised approaches that cen
tre Indigenous knowledge\, relational pedagogies and place-based learnin
g can strengthen climate change literacy and community resilience. Afric
an philosophies such as Ubuntu and\n Ukama emphasise the interconnectedn
ess of humans\, non-humans\, ancestors and ecosystems\, valuing spiritua
lity\, emotion and intergenerational wisdom in responding to climate cha
nge. Alongside plural climate storylines that challenge dominant discour
ses\, such\n ontologies can inform decolonial\, participatory and cultur
ally responsive education that bridges knowledge systems\, addresses une
qual power relations and advances climate action\, resilience and pluriv
 ersal justice.
