Khalid Malik has had a distinguished career in the UNDP, having served as UN Resident Coordinator in China (late 2003-early 2010), Director, UNDP Evaluation Office and UN Representative, Uzbekistan (1993-1997) before taking up the directorship of the Human Development Report Office (HDRO).At the HDRO he was lead author of the 2014 Human Development Report on Vulnerability and Resilience and the 2013 Human Development Report on The Rise of the South: Human Progress in a Diverse World was extensively involved in debates on human development indices, establishing in 2012 the annual Conference on Measuring Human Progress. As UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC), China, he established close partnerships with the Chinese leadership, the government and the party and helped establish the International Poverty Reduction Centre. Publications include Capacity for Development (with Carlos Lopes and Sakiko Fukuda Parr) (Earthscan, 2002); Lessons Learned in Crisis and Post-Conflict Situations (UN Pub, 2002) “Why China has Grown So Fast For So Long” Oxford University Press 2012; and a new handbook on Readings in Human Development Concepts and Measurement (OUP-likely date early 2015).
