DESCRIPTION:Prof Chris Kilburn\, UEA\, Norwich\, joins us for a Departmen
t of Earth and Environmental Sciences seminar. Abstract below. \n\nForec
asts of eruption are often uncertain at volcanoes reawakening after seve
ral generations at rest. Uncertainty fosters scepticism about warnings o
f volcanic activity and can hamper the success of emergency procedures.
Recent events at Campi Flegrei\, in southern Italy\, provide textbook ex
amples. Unrest at the volcano has twice triggered emergencies without er
uption since 1970. It has\n\nencouraged doubt that volcanic processes be
low the surface have been responsible. In contrast\, simultaneous advanc
es in volcano science suggest that the possibility of an eruption has in
creased with each emergency. They have also improved the quality of fore
casts and explanations of why they are still not perfect. As a result\,
they offer new opportunities for increasing public confidence in warning
s of the volcano's future behaviour.
