The ways in which notions like the ‘learning society’ and the ‘knowledge economy’ re-draw educational philosophy, policy and practice will be examined, starting from the 1980s and tracing such linkages through to the present day (via especially the ‘Great Recession of 2008-TBA’). The paper will draw especially on anthropological insights into the nature of those linkages.
