Competition and cooperation in organized criminal networks
James Coutinho (University of Manchester); Johan Koskinen (University of Manchester); Andrew Wright (Calgary Police)
Our talk introduces a new dataset we have been working on which contains 3137 individuals suspected or confirmed to be involved in organized crime in Alberta, Canada. We explore some ways of thinking about processes of competition and collaboration among organized criminals, and use exponential random graph modelling (ERGM) to examine how these processes shape multilevel network structures. We also look at how competitive and collaborative behaviour may differ according to factors such as organizational culture and an individual's role in a criminal organization.
