This workshop provides an overview of World Literatures as a debated theoretical and methodological field. Its interdisciplinary approach will draw out the political and historical implications of reading texts globally.
The workshop will offer the opportunity to work critically with contemporary and cutting-edge world literatures and theory through discussion-led and practical group exercises. In groups, students will be asked to approach a text as ‘world literature’, facilitating an interdisciplinary dialogue that might encompass history, religion, politics, and translation as well as literature.
The workshop opens with a group discussion on how to define ‘world literatures’ that brings into play the expertise of participants. This is followed by an overview of theoretical engagements with the topic before engaging in practical exercises. For instance, participants are encouraged to think about translation in more detail and to consider how texts are mediated across film, television and social media as well as traditional written forms.
The workshop will close by asking participants to relate methods for studying world literatures to their own research practice.
