Possibilities for nationwide population-based research in Denmark exemplified by investigations of environmental and genetic risk factors for schizophrenia
Prof Carsten Bøcker Pedersen and Prof Esben Agerbo, Aarhus University, Denmark
Wed 21st June, 12-2 pm (12-1pm seminar, 1-2pm lunch and informal discussion)
Room A113 Samuel Alexander Building
Professors Carsten Bøcker Pedersen and Esben Agerbo from Aarhus University in Denmark will present research possibilities utilising the rich Danish population-based registry series.
Professor Carsten Bøcker Pedersen will first introduce the Danish population-based registers, the possibility to link nationwide health outcomes with exposures related to air and drinking water quality measurement, and the unique possibility to obtain information on genotypes and other biomarkers through linkage with the Danish newborn Screening Biobank. The latter will involve a short introduction to the population-based iPSYCH sample including more than 80,000 Danes who have all been genotyped.
Thereafter Professor Carsten Bøcker Pedersen will introduce two ongoing studies, one considering the amount of naturally occurring lithium in drinking water on the risk of schizophrenia, and another study considering the potential adverse effect of exposure to NO2 during early life on the later risk of developing schizophrenia. The latter studies were based on the entire Danish population.
Professor Esben Agerbo will talk about the polygenic risk score for schizophrenia and show a number of examples of how we have used this score in combination with registry information.
This one-hour seminar will be followed by lunch and information discussions.
