DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Dr Maria Pampaka and Prof Julian Williams\n\nWor
 kshop Summary and Content Outline: This 1-day workshop aims to introduce
  participants to measurement theory and the Rasch model for construction
  and validation of measures. It covers the basic theory behind measureme
 nt\, from an Item Response Theory perspective\, focusing on the assumpti
 ons of the Rasch models\, in particular.  The Rasch model provides the m
 eans to create measures (or score scales) from a combination of items in
  tests or questionnaires.  The principles governing the application of s
 uch models are shown through examples from educational measurement but a
 re easily applicable to other areas in social and health sciences. Parti
 cipants will have the chance to practice with various models of the Rasc
 h family (Dichotomous\, Rating Scale and Partial Credit) with specialise
 d software (Winsteps). \n\nThe workshop will be of interest to researche
 rs and practitioners involved\, among other things\, with educational me
 asurement\, measurement of satisfaction for evaluation\, tests of skills
 \, knowledge and other cognitive outcomes\, attitudinal scales\, and mea
 sures of dispositions.\n\nThe workshop will be delivered with a mixture 
 of lectures and practical sessions\, around the following themes:\n-	Int
 roduction to (Rasch) Measurement \n-	The Dichotomous Rasch Model (with s
 oftware application)\n-	The basics of the validation framework with the 
 Rasch Model \n-	Examples and applications with the Rating Scale Model (w
 hich is appropriate for Likert type items) and the Partial Credit Model 
 (which allows for items with different number of response categories to 
 be analysed together).  \n-	Differential Item Functioning\, Optimal func
 tioning of rating scales and dimensionality. \n\nRequirements:\nParticip
 ants should have some basic knowledge of introductory statistics. Some f
 amiliarity or previous experience with syntax (commands) in statistical 
 packages will also be useful. Examples of data sets from various context
 s will be provided\; however\, participants might also bring their own d
 atasets and problems to analyse\, possibly with a view to preparing a va
 lidation report or paper for publication. In order to ensure that the da
