 tour takes visitors on a journey from the beginnings of England’s first 
 civic university to the sites of world changing discoveries. It begins w
 ithin the fine neo-gothic architecture of the University’s Old Quadrangl
 e and tells the story of Owens College\, which would become England’s fi
 rst civic university.\n\nFounded from the philanthropy of wealthy Manche
 ster merchants\, Owens College captured the energy and spirit of the ind
 ustrial revolution. Its successor\, the Victoria University of Mancheste
 r\, helped establish the style of the modern university with its secular
 ist approach and pursuit of research alongside teaching.\n\nThe tour tra
 ces the development of the University into the twentieth century and vis
 its key sites of discovery including where Ernest Rutherford first split
  the atom and where Alan Turing helped lay the foundations of modern com
 puting. \n\n\nThe tour is outside and lasts around 1 hour.\n\nBooking is
