DESCRIPTION:\nWhile China has long had a reputation for imitation\, Chine
 se companies are now starting to innovate. This talk is based on a four-
 year programme of research conducted by the CEIBS Centre on China Innova
 tion and\n is the subject of a book China’s Next Strategic Advantage: Fr
 om Imitation to Innovation\, The MIT Press\, 2016. \nThe research from 2
 011 to 2015 included interviews with hundreds of R&D and innovation-rela
 ted executives at dozens of Chinese and foreign companies. This talk wil
 l cover:\n\n•	The three phases in the evolution of the innovation capabi
 lities of Chinese firms\n•	Characteristics of China’s environment that f
 oster innovation\, both on the supply\n•	and the demand side\n•	The spec
 ific nature of Chinese companies’ approach to innovation and the factors
  driving their foreign expansion\n•	The stages in MNCs’ R&D strategies i
