DESCRIPTION:In 2017\, when the so-called fourth wave of feminism in Chile
was about to erupt in large feminist strikes across the country a year
later\, school-aged young women in the city of Concepción were beginning
to call themselves feminist and criticise the machismo of parents and t
eachers. The vocabulary of feminism frame their ideas of education\, the
ir hopes of becoming economically independent from men and their dreams
of helping their parents\, especially mothers\, to salir adelante (move
forward) from poverty and machista relationships. Education plays a pivo
tal role in these hopes\, since the shift of the economy of the city fro
m industrial to services sector triggers new challenges and opportunitie
s for female employment. Contrary to ideas of how social mobility is an
individualistic endeavour\, I argue here that for these youths social mo
bility also entails family dependencies and involves a great deal of fem
ale intergenerational solidarities. This asks for reconsideration of ord
inary non-activist feminisms and everyday dependencies\, as well as a di
scussion with critiques of neoliberal feminisms.
