DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Kenji Terao (Warwick)\n\nTitle: An introduction to m
odular curves\n\nAbstract: Modular curves are objects of central importa
nce in arithmetic geometry\, parametrizing elliptic curves with particul
ar Galois representations. They form a key part of the proof of results
such as Fermat's Last Theorem and Mazur's torsion theorem. In this talk\
, I will aim to give a gentle introduction to these objects and how they
relate to some of the aforementioned theorems. Along the way\, we will
take a stroll through the worlds of moduli spaces and Galois representat
ions of elliptic curves. In particular\, little to no prior knowledge wi
ll be assumed.\n\nRoom: Frank Adams 1
