In this week’s seminar, we will run a special seminar in collaboration with the primary care department at the University of Sheffield.
The seminar invite has gone out to people at both departments. At the start of the seminar, there will be brief presentation from each department, outlining some of the research and capacity building going on in each place. We hope that this will highlight opportunities for collaboration in the future.
Following that, we will move on to the main seminar by Professor Chris Burton - Professor of Primary Medical Care, University of Sheffield:
‘We need to talk about (persistent physical) symptoms’
Physical symptoms which are disproportionate to (current) physical pathology are common in all fields of medicine.
In this talk Professor Burton will describe some developments in understanding the intersection of body processes and symptoms and consider why the term medically unexplained symptoms is particularly problematic. I will conclude by suggesting how some of these recent developments could influence the way we talk with patients about symptoms.
