DESCRIPTION:Outline\nUse of Bayesian methods is becoming increasingly wid
espread within quantitative social and health sciences\, particularly fo
r analysing data with complex structure\, such as hierarchical or multil
evel data. However\, very few applied researchers have any formal traini
ng in Bayesian methods. This two-day course aims to introduce quantitati
ve researchers to the basic principles of Bayesian inference and simulat
ion-based methods for estimating Bayesian models\, and to highlight some
of the potential benefits that a Bayesian approach can offer. There is
a large practical component to this course with time for hands-on data a
nalysis using examples drawn mainly from the social and health sciences.
\n\nTopics covered will include: \n- Conjugate Bayesian inference for bi
nary\, count and continuous data\n- Making inference from posterior dist
ributions\n- Choosing prior distributions\n- Introduction to Monte Carlo
simulation methods\, MCMC methods and Gibbs sampling\n- Simple Bayesian
regression models\n- Introduction to Bayesian hierarchical (multi-level
) models\n- Introduction to using the WinBUGS software
