Title :
Of Money and Relations: Marginality and Post-Revolutionary Life in South-Western Tunisia
Description :
Redeyef is a mining town located in the Tunisian southwest, known nationwide for its unrest and protests that unfolded over time since the French colonial rule. Following the 2010-2011 uprisings that led to the fall of dictator Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali and democratic transition, Redeyef has also become the epitome of marginality – a broad concept generally intended to describe the state of Tunisian inland as exclusion from development and participation in wealth redistribution. Locally, people recur to social ties and family relations to secure a living, improve their economic condition, and find occupations within and outside the “formal” job market. Based on the book Revolutionary Tunisia: Inequality, Marginality, and Power, this talk will describe marginality as a social space whose perpetuation is secured by State institutions, labor workers’ unions, local entrepreneurs, and the inhabitants themselves, and will show how a relational approach can shed light onto the minutiae of a post-revolutionary process.
