Join us for an informal lunch event exploring how textile science and the arts meet to create materials that are inspired by nature.

Interdisciplinarity is vital to address challenges from a more holistic approach. If you are wondering how material science and the arts can meet and interact to showcase innovative materials, this research café is for you.

Hear about recent research led by Ahu Gumrah Parry (bp-ICAM Kathleen Lonsdale Research Fellow, BIOFUM Lab, The University of Manchester) on animate materials for design which focuses on developing materials that are inspired by nature. The innovate animate materials are designed to respond and interact with their environment such as with simple touch they will shift colour as well as their shape. In working together with colleagues from the RCA the results are also exhibited to the general public in an artistic way to make science accessible to everyone.

Dr Ahu Gumrah Parry will be in conversation with Jane Wood (Lecturer in Fashion & Textile Technology, Fashion Business & Technology, The University of Manchester). Jane’s own research spans across textile technology and microbiology, whereby she develops sustainable materials grown from bacteria. She has developed various public engagement workshops and also the academic lead for the Textile 2030 initiative that explores and implements changes required by industry to combat its impact on climate change.

This event is presented in partnership with the Creative Manchester and Sustainable Futures Research Platforms at The University of Manchester.
