The next seminar in the ‘Celebrating Research Success in FLS’ series will be given by Dr Andrew Gilmore, who is a member of the Cell-Matrix Biology (CMB) Research Theme in the Faculty of Life Sciences. Andrew’s presentation will be entitled ‘Delving into the dynamics of death’. The regulation of apoptosis is fundamental to understanding how cancer cells respond to chemotherapeutic drugs. Almost all cells in the body contain everything they need to kill themselves in just a few minutes. The goal of many cancer treatments is to activate this cell death process. However, some cancer cells can become remarkably adept at avoiding this fate, resulting in drug resistance. Andrew will present his recent findings highlighting how single cells fluctuate in their sensitivity to apoptosis, which can dramatically alter their response to drugs. He will also highlight how the facilities and staff in the Bioimaging and Biological Mass Spectrometry core facilities have contributed to these studies.
