DESCRIPTION:Despite international commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emi
 ssions a number of countries\, and companies\, remain committed to signi
 ficant expansion of the coal industry. The three proposed coal mines in 
 Australia’s Galilee Basin have the potential to produce a combined 100 m
 illion tonnes of coal per year for up to 90 years. The proposed Carmicha
 el mine would stretch 40km - slightly over the distance from Bolton to G
 lossop.\n\nPut simply\, there is no scenario in which a world that is ra
 pidly reducing greenhouse gas emissions needs substantial investment in 
 new export coal mines. Yet existing policies (e.g. support for renewable
 s) can have the perverse effect of lowering the price of coal\, encourag
 ing its further consumption\, as a result of substitution effects and th
 e so-called “Green Paradox” whereby expectation of future climate polici
 es accelerates production from existing reserves.\n\nIn this context\, t
 his seminar will focused on: \n\na) the scope of the planned coal mine e
 xpansions in Australia and Indonesia as case studies of the global probl
 em of coal export expansion\;\n\nb) the economic case for a moratorium i
 n new coal mines in smoothing the adjustment to greater reliance on rene
 wable energy\; and\n\nc) the geopolitics of a moratorium on new coal min
 es in the lead up to Paris\, particularly the potential to help maintain
  coal prices for existing coal mines.\n
