DESCRIPTION:The John Rylands Research Institute and Library holds the ent
ire archive of the Manchester Guardian. In this series of events to mark
the Guardian bicentenary\, panels of UoM academics and special guests w
ill each discuss an item from the archive\, its relevance to today’s new
s and media\, and how it may influence our future.\n\nFor this second li
vestreamed event in our series we will discuss how has media reporting o
n humanitarian issues changed over the past 20 years? How could it becom
e more progressive? And how can the Western media utilise its power to b
etter the lives of the vulnerable people it reports on? Professor of Cul
tural History and executive director of the Humanitarian and Conflict Re
sponse Institute\, Bertrand Taithe will join Annie Kelly\, an award-winn
ing human rights journalist for the Guardian and Observer\, will chair a
panel including Lindsey Hilsum\, international editor for Channel 4 New
s and Waad Al-Kateab\, Syrian journalist\, and creator of the BAFTA-winn
ing documentary For Sama.\n\nIn 2015\, the UN refugee agency reported th
at war is one of the main reasons behind human displacement\, and for de
cades we have seen refugees putting their lives at risk to escape greate
r dangers in their home countries. How these stories are reported has a
momentous impact on how refugees are received and treated. Many lose the
ir stories to offensive monikers\, or their individual identity to repor
ting that covers migration on a massive scale\, and fails to connect wit
h the people behind the headlines.
