He obtained his PhD in molecular biology at the University of Montréal where he studied cell specific transcription during pituitary d evelopment in mice with Dr Jacques Drouin. He pursued his interest in tr anscription as a post-doctoral fellow at the Gurdon Institute in Cambrid ge\, where he contributed to the first genome-wide RNAi screen in a meta zoan with Dr Julie Ahringer. He started his independent laboratory in 20 07 through an MRC career development award at the University of Manchest er. Using RNAi screens aimed at attenuators of RAS signalling\, his grou p identified a homologue of the human MLL (Mixed Lineage Leukaemia) comp lex in C. elegans. Gino’s group is currently studying how epigenetics re gulates ageing and stress responses across generations. \n\nAlan Whitmar sh studies the cellular response to stress. He obtained a BSc in biochem istry and a PhD in molecular biology from the University of Sheffield. W hilst working as a post-doctoral fellow with Roger Davis at UMASS Medica l Center\, he identified novel components of a key stress-activated MAP kinase pathway and helped elucidate their roles in development and disea se. Since starting his own lab as a Lister Institute-Jenner Research Fel low at the University of Manchester\, he has addressed how scaffold prot eins regulate MAP kinase signalling and identified the JIP1 scaffold pro tein as a regulator of axonal development. More recently\, his lab has d eveloped an interest in stress signalling from mitochondria and how this impacts on gene expression and ageing. This led to a fruitful collabora tion with Gino Poulin\, who has expertise in linking signalling and tran scriptional outputs to function in C. elegans. \n\nRegistration is recom mended and can be made via Eventbrite [https://fbmh-research-seminar-21j une2017.eventbrite.co.uk]\, or by contacting lorna.tittle@manchester.ac. uk. \n\nAbout the Faculty Research Seminar Series:\n\nThe monthly lunch time Faculty Research Seminar Series is open to all staff and students f rom across the Faculty of Biology\, Medicine and Health and the Universi ty\, offering an opportunity to celebrate the Faculty’s research achieve ment and stimulate scientific interaction. \nEach event focuses on one o f the eight strategic research domains. Each month one of the Research Domain Directors selects two speakers from within the Faculty to highlig ht and showcase an area of research in their domain. There will usually be one senior speaker and one junior/early career researcher. Speakers include clinical\, non-clinical and basic science researchers. Present ations are pitched at a non-specialist level\, as the series aims to att ract people from across the Faculty.\n\nHeld on Wednesday lunchtimes eac h month\, each meeting lasts an hour\, comprising two 20 minute presenta tions\, with each presentation being followed by 5-10 minutes questions and discussion. \n\nLunch is available 12.30-1pm\; presentations run 1-2 pm.
