DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce that the fifth series of Bogdano
w Lectures in Holocaust Studies will be given by Prof. Tony Kushner (Uni
versity of Southampton). \n\nThe event is open to the public\; there is
no need to book a place.\n\nLecture 1. The Concept of Illegality: Defini
ng the ‘Other’.\n\nAbstract: Since the ancient world\, the tendency to c
ategorise people in a hierarchical way has been prevalent. There have be
en ‘out’ groups including minority and those of migrant origin\, through
out history subject to discrimination and violence. It is\, perhaps\, on
ly since the twentieth century that migrants have been defined as ‘illeg
al’. This introduction explains how this came to happen on a general lev
el and then using brief examples to illustrate the impact of such labell
ing. These case studies will range from East European Jews in the 1900s
to more recent examples such as in Britain with those from the ‘Windrush
generation’ and in the USA with those at the Mexican border from Centr
 al America.
