DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\n\nEuropean social funding bodies aligned with fil
 m festivals\, have been instrumental through their support  in developin
 g the careers of some of the most high profile contemporary Latin Americ
 an filmmakers.  The Hubert Bals Fund\, part of the Rotterdam Festival\, 
 the German World Cinema Fund\, an initiative of the Berlinale\, and Ciné
 fondation a programme linked to the Cannes film festival\, have all favo
 ured Latin American directors. Beneficiaries of grants  from European fu
 nding bodies  (among many others) include Mexico’s Carlos Reygadas\, the
  Peruvian ClaudiaLlosa\, Lisandro Alonso\, Diego Lerman\, Lucrecia Marte
 l\, Lucía Puenzo and Pablo Trapero\, all from Argentina.\n\n\nThis paper
  will outline key debates relating to the political and social implicati
 ons of this new funding landscape. It will examine the arguments of thos
 e who are critical and those who are supportive of these developments an
 d drawing on examples of films from the above-mentioned directors will a
 sk whether relationships between funding bodies and filmmakers create ne
 w forms of dependence or new partnerships. In addition\, the paper consi
 ders whether the contemporary auteurist festival film is a new transnati
 onal cinematic art form that makes critics reconsider notions of nationa
 l cinema.\n
