Gas supplies 30% of the energy we use in the UK: to heat our homes, to power industry and to generate electricity. But this fuel has a contested future. For enthusiasts, gas will provide a low cost solution to our energy challenges. Others are more cautious, and point to significant economic and enviornmental risks from the use of this fossil fuel. The prospect of shale gas has polarised this debate further. This seminar will discuss whether gas can help meet energy policy goals such as climate change mitigation, energy secuity and affordability.
