DESCRIPTION:Improving patient safety: using evidence and insight to preve
 nt suicide in mental health care\nIn partnership with The Manchester Cen
 tre for Regulation\, Governance and Public Law (ManReg) at the Universit
 y of Manchester\n\nGuest speaker Professor Louis Appleby will share insi
 ghts into how health care services can be made safer for people at risk 
 of suicide. Professor Appleby will draw on twenty years of research to d
 emonstrate: \n•	the importance of connecting learning from ‘big data’ wi
 th the individual experiences of bereaved families\n•	how this can be us
 ed to drive improvements in mental health patient safety. \nHe will also
  consider the value of creating a ‘learn not blame’ culture that uses le
 arning from serious incidents to improve the quality of mental health se
 rvices.\n\nProfessor Appleby’s lecture will be followed by a response fr
 om Rob Behrens CBE\, the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman. Thi
 s will include reflections on the themes we see in our casework\, such a
 s those highlighted in our Missed Opportunities report.\nThe lecture wil
 l be of interest to policy makers\, commissioners\, senior leaders and s
 ervice providers working in the NHS and wider health services.\n\nAbout 
 our speaker\nProfessor Appleby is Director of Psychiatry at the Universi
 ty of Manchester and Director of the National Confidential Inquiry into 
 Suicide and Safety in Mental Health.\nHe also leads the National Suicide
  Prevention Strategy for England and the Centre for Mental Health and Sa
 fety\, where he investigates suicide and self-harm at the largest resear
 ch unit in this field internationally. \nAs the Government's former Nati
 onal Director for Mental Health\, Professor Appleby led a national progr
 amme of reform in mental health care in England. He then became National
  Clinical Director for Health and Criminal Justice. From 2013-2019\, he 
 was a non-executive director of the Care Quality Commission. \n\nFurther
  details\nThe lecture will take place from 6.30-8.00pm on 5 May at the U
 niversity of Manchester.  This will be followed by refreshments until 8.
 30pm.\nAttendance is free but registration is required.   \nDoors will o
 pen at 6pm. We ask that you arrive by 6.15pm. \n\n
