DESCRIPTION:The fly in the ointment for any social scientific research us
ing Twitter data is that we do not know who tweets. \n\nTwitter does not
require users to publish demographic information such as gender\, age\,
location\, occupation. This lack of data on who is represented on the s
ocial media platform makes it difficult for researchers to explore how s
ocial phenomenon manifest online in relation to demographic characterist
ics.\n\nIn this webinar Luke Sloan\, Senior Lecturer at Cardiff Universi
ty and Co-Director of Cardiff Q-Step\, will explore demographic represen
tation on Twitter. He will discuss recently developed methods for derivi
ng demographic proxies from Twitter metadata for age\, sex and social cl
ass and for comparing the characteristics of UK Twitter users with Censu
s data on the UK population.
