Between Boredom and Wasting Time:
An Alternate Valuation of Time
My paper draws upon my own Fijian materials as well as other, comparative cases in order to outline alternative valuations of time from conditions where wage labour is not the dominant mode of valuing time or where the discipline of the clock does not prevail. I will look particularly on time that (from a North European point of view) appears even superfluous, thereby to focus on the key difference between unwanted time (boredom) and something that could be described as ‘constructive’ time.
