DESCRIPTION:This seminar is part of CIDRAL's Theory Intensives series.\n\
nProfessor Nigel Vincent (Linguistics\, University of Manchester) will l
ead a Theory Intensive seminar on the work of Ferdinand de Saussure.\n\n
Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) is commonly described as one of the fo
unders of structuralism based on the ideas contained in the book Cours d
e linguistique structurale which bears his name though it was in fact wr
itten by his students and published posthumously in 1916. In this class
we will look at three things:\n\n-the way those ideas have been taken up
and developed or challenged within linguistics\n\n-the wider discussion
and development of these ideas within the humanities and social science
disciplines\n\n-the relation between the Cours and Saussure’s other wri
tings\, many of which remained unpublished in his lifetime\n\nReadings a

inguistics'\, trans. Roy Harris (London: Bloomsbury\, 2013 or in French\
, bibliographic detail available in the scan):\n\nProfessor Vincent also
suggests the following as secondary reading:\n\nBeata Stawarska\, 'Saus
sure's Philosophy of Language as Phenomenology' (Oxford University Press
 \, 2015)\n\nJohn E. Joseph\, 'Saussure' (Oxford University Press\, 2012)
\n\nCarol Sanders (ed.)\, 'Cambridge Companion to Saussure' (Cambridge U
 niversity Press\, 2004)\n\nJonathan Culler\, 'Saussure' (1976)
