 stronomy and the Faculty of Science and Engineering are delighted to inv
 ite Professor Phipps to Manchester\, in what will be a great opportunity
  for both students and staff to learn about the best approaches to suppo
 rt victims of sexual violence on campus.\n\nProfessor Phipps is a reader
  in sociology at the University of Sussex and was the co-author of two N
 US reports that investigated lad culture in UK universities and the prev
 alence of sexual harassment and assault. She mainly focuses on the worry
 ing epidemic of sexual assault in UK institutions\, including:\n\n- leve
 ls of sexual assault reporting in universities (one in ten incidents are
  reported to the police\, but only 4% are reported to the learning insti
 tution)\;\n- the support available for victims of sexual assault and how
  to help students who have been assaulted\;\n- what to do about disclosu
 re - Alison is working on an EU project to evaluate programmes and to se
 e what works and what doesn't\;\n- lad party culture encouraged by big b
 rands such as Smirnoff\;\n- communications - more people need to be awar
 e of what's going on on-campus with regard to support and care programme
 s.\n\nAlison focuses on neoliberal discourse and how neoliberalism helps
  to suppress the need to talk about sexual violence as it focuses on fin
 ance and reputation rather than wellbeing\, and how equality and diversi
 ty are subordinate to market concerns.\n
