DESCRIPTION:This concert will now take place on Thursday 23rd March at 14
:30 with a change of venue. The concert will now take place Internationa
l Anthony Burgess Foundation\, Chorlton Mill\, 3 Cambridge Street. This
is a lovely venue just a few minutes walk from the Martin Harris Centre
so please join us there. Your support is very much appreciated and we ho
pe that you will still be able to attend.\n\n\nThe historical roots of k
lezmer lie in the wedding music of Eastern European Ashkenazi\, Yiddish-
speaking Jewry. Its survival owes much to its move from this Old World t
o the New World (in the early part of the twentieth century) and the US-
led klezmer revival (beginning in the 1970s). Currently\, klezmer is a d
ynamic world genre as well as Jewish heritage music. The University ens
emble is named after a prominent Manchester musician (Michael Kahan) who
\, much like the current and former members of MKK\, performed in the cl
assical and klezmer genres amongst others. Michael was tragically killed
in 2008\, and the ensemble was formed in 2011 by Ros Hawley and Richard
Fay to celebrate Michael’s contribution to music in the city and to kle
zmer performance in particular. The ensemble is directed by Richard and
MKK-alumnus Daniel Mawson who tutor each cohort.
