The Anatomy of Organised Crime Cooperation in a UK Police Area
Organised Crime Groups (OCGs) constitute the backbone of many illegal markets and a threat to the well-being of people and communities. While wide-ranging non-network literature has explored OCGs and their activities in different settings, network approaches have lagged behind, particularly in assessing interactions among OCGs. In this work, we focus on collaboration among OCGs. We use police records to explore a unifying motivating question: what are the drivers of cooperation at the OCG level? We explore the determinants of cooperation among OCGs based on OCG individual characteristics, such as size, type of activities and relative control over its territory (turf), as well as network characteristics (repeated interactions and closure). We approach the study of cooperation among OCGs from several complementary angles, including a focus on dyadic tie formation through a battery of Exponential Random Graph Models (ERGMs). The study also addresses the issue of stability of OCG relationships and its impact on the emergence of violence.
